The Herengracht the most prestigious and exclusive canal of Amsterdam City

It is recommended to explore the "Herengracht" and side alleys “Jordaan—9 Straatjes”

“Herengracht” [the gentlemen’s or Lord's canal] is considered of the most important prestigious of the four major canals in the city center of Amsterdam. The canal is named after the “regenten” [gentlemen regents] who governed the city in the 16th/17th century the more influential and richest merchants and regents, mayors of the city lived on this canal. This stylish part is called “Gouden Bocht” [the Golden Bend] with many double wide mansions it was in the 16th-17th century custom that the wider the front of house the wealthier and influential the owner. Even today living on this prestigious canal is seen as classy and high-status. For shopping however you have to deviate into the side streets and alley- ways where the fun shops are.

Amsterdam Calendar - 2013 will be a very special year in celebration of several events lots of things to do in the city from art exhibitions to a variety of concerts- processions and international sporting events so it will be a great year for Amsterdam shopping too.

At the beginning of this canal you will find “de Herenmarkt” [gentlemen’s market] a square that now serves as play area for children. Behind this little square is the West India House situated which was built in 1617. At no 81 you will see the oldest house of Amsterdam with a beautiful step gable built in 1590 as a traditional merchant's house. At no 255  close to the Dam square the Rembrandt Classic Hotel is situated.  It is a 3 star hotel and a great location in the proximity of “de Jordaan and 9 Straatjes”  and right in the center of the old city which is the very best place from which to start your shopping expedition.

Around the corner of the Rembrandt hotel you find a remarkable shopping street called “de Gasthuismolensteeg” with a variety of trendy fashion and  boutiques and shoe wear. 

Restaurant “Zuid Zeeland”  [South Sea-land] located at no 413 is a well-known restaurant frequented by famous people like Al Gore and Matt Damon- the restaurant has a French cuisine and an intimate atmosphere.
