“Jordaan” the name of this colorful 16th century district of Amsterdam derives from the French word “Jardin” [garden] that explains that the street names are flower or plants names

"De Jordaan" is a vibrant colorful part of the old city center where most of the small craft ateliers, silver/goldsmiths, jewellery shops, well known painters, fashion shops and tattoo parlors are located in a dense populated area of 5 sq.km.

A typical “Jordaanstreet from which the Westerkerk church is visible in the distance -- but also take notice of  “de Elandsgracht – Westerstraat – Noordermarkt  and Hazenstraat”  these streets very popular and scattered with small craft shops-artists ateliers- restaurants and many trendy fashion shops as well. Many locals living here in this former working class district -  today  yuppies are the main inhabitants of this privileged neighborhood of Amsterdam. Therefore this district has become one of the most exclusive - fashionable places in the Netherlands. It is home to many art galleries – mainly exhibiting modern art and is also dotted with speciality shops and restaurants.  Street/farmers markets are held regularly at “Noordermarkt – Westerstraat”   “Lapjesmarkt” [textile market] and “de Linden markt” at “de Lindengracht”.

There are many “hofjes” [inner courtyards]  to be found in “de Jordaan” many of them are with restored houses and peaceful gardens. These courtyards were built by rich people for elderly women, as a kind of charity.

The district is surrounded by the “de Lijnbaansgracht” canal to the west, the “de Prinsengracht runs to the east of the city and “de Brouwersgracht” to the north and “de Leidsegracht” to the south. The “Rozengracht” the main traffic artery through this neighborhood is a damped canal now.

The master painter Rembrandt van Rijn spent his last years on the “Rozengracht”. He died poor and was buried in the “Westerkerk” [church] on the corner of “Rozengracht” and “Prinsengracht”. Nearby is the Anne Frank House located on the “Prinsengracht” 267  the museum dedicated to Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank - who hid with her family in the house from  world war ll Nazi persecution.
