Tip: When you take a walk  along the whole stretch of the "Prinsengracht"  from “Prins Hendrikkade” near “Centraal station” to the Amstel” quite a distance  but very enjoyable - you have probably seen more unique Amsterdam shops and sites than any tourist guide will show you - especially if you take time to visit the neighbouring streets running of “Prinsengracht”  like “de Jordaan” area. Sometimes one has to wander 'off the beaten track' to discover what this great city has to offer. 

Special recommendation for young woman’s fashion boutique Second Female “Cafe van Puffelen”  and the Pancake bakery very popular with young and old and the Pulitzer Hotel famous for the place where the yearly “Prinsengracht”  concert takes place on the pontoon & private boats in the canal.

“de Jordaan” [jardin translated garden] quarter a former flower garden area a working class neighbourhood build around 1600 just outside the ring of canals. The expansion is surrounded by the “Lijnbaansgracht” canal to the west--“de Prinsengracht” to the east “de Brouwersgracht” to the north and “de Leidsegracht” to the south.

“De Westerkerk” Overlooking “de Jordaan” especially its tower “de Westertoren” is a symbol of Amsterdam and the bordering neighbourhood “de Jordaan” Many popular Amsterdam nostalgic lyrics are composed about the sound of the bells of “de Westertoren”. 

Organ concerts are still enjoyed here.

The construction of additional churches was to undertake result of the early western expansion of the city anno 1620 - as a result two churches were build – “de Noorderkerk” and “de Westerkerk”. “de Westerkerk” was intended as a big church for food preparation and the religious needs of the populations of the northern part of the ring of canals. A smaller church, “de Noorderkerk” was designed for church-goers of “de Jordaan”
