Amsterdam’s Waterlooplein Flea Market Vintage Marketplace

Amsterdam’s Waterlooplein daily Flea market; where you’ll find biggest vintage clothing outdoor marketplace, and a great assortment of bric-a-brac.

Waterlooplein is the oldest main Flea and most fascinating open air  daily markets of Amsterdam. This interesting market is located near the town hall and “Stopera” music theatre and the Moses and Aaron church which are both close to “jodenbreestraat” the former Jewish quarter and Jewish historical museum.

Amsterdam’s largest daily flea market is located near the town hall at the Amstel river in the very center of the city. It is highly recommended to spend a couple hours browsing through its many stalls to get a taste of the local culture. Every stall has something different on offer, including vintage clothes, antiques, knick-knacks, souvenirs, bicycle parts and much more.

The square is a must see place because it is much in vogue and connected with the youth culture. In the over 300 stalls you can stroll around and browse through a large collection of  cool looking items from underdeveloped countries of Africa and Asia all over the world like bric-a-brac, old military uniforms, Cool posters of all kind, reproductions of old masters as well as get a tattoo. But for the lucky ones with a real feel for art or other things; they might be lucky hitting the jackpot, finding a real undervalued precious piece of art.

The square was created in 1882 when the Leprozengracht and Houtgracht canals were filled in. The square is named after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
The adjoined town hall covered passage is worth visiting for it's collection of paintings to get a real good impression and feeling of old Amsterdam how the town was in the 19th. century.

The square became a marketplace when the city government decided that the Jewish merchants in the nearby Jodenbreestraat and Sint Antoniebreestraat had to move their stalls to the square. The Waterlooplein became a daily market (except on Saturdays, the Jewish sabbath) in 1893.
