“Westergasfabriek” located at the district “Westerpark” of Amsterdam in a former gasworks complex the Culture Park is a great place to visit during the weekend markets or just to relax in one of the many little cafes and restaurants at the where you have the choice to enjoy the colourful street scene or just visit one of the many market stalls on the weekend markets to bargain a little with the stall holders.
In the 19th century the Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA) built in 1885 “Westerpark” culture park [the Western Gas Factory] the complex was strategically situated between the “Haarlemmer trekvaart” and the first railway line in the Netherlands running from Amsterdam to nearby Haarlem. The buildings of “Westerpark complex” are of historic significance and were designed by Isaac Gosschalk in a so called variation on Dutch Renaissance style. At the completion in 1885 “de Westergasfabriek” was the largest gas extraction plant in the Netherlands.
The mixture of the distinctive monumental culture heritage and the creative atmosphere of “Westerpark” makes the “Westergasfabriek” an unique place to visit.

In 1967 the production of gas from the Factory ceased permanently and the GEB [general energy board] destroyed some of the buildings among them the gas plant itself and the water historic tower.
In 1992 the GEB left the buildings and they were taken over by the District Council of “Westerpark” and in 1989 the remaining buildings were officially recognised as industrial culture heritage monuments and the park was opened as a park in 2003.

This spacious cultural city park adorned with – trees - streams and playgrounds - is an ideal spot to go for an outing on a nice sunny day. It is easy to find a drink or a bite to eat at one of the dozens of cafe’s bars and restaurants or shop at one of the galleries or simply visit the cinema or theatre and if you are in the mood for sport - you can enjoy a set of tennis at one of the free tennis courts open to all visitors.
The park hosts festivals end of every month weekend markets, performances and exhibitions and the famous annual Cinekid festival a film - television and media festival for children- this festival is enormously popular too to with the young and old.
Where can you find more varied cultural and relaxed surroundings with a great ambiance in Amsterdam than in the vicinity of the “Westerpark”.
