Best way to get an idea/glimpse into Amsterdam's fascinating past of the city is to visit the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, where you can follow a display of the last eight centuries of municipal development of the city, many interesting objects such as 700-year-old shoes

The culture and architectural buildings lover will be fascinated by the Amstelkring; a charming church in the middle of “the Red Light” District in Amsterdam which might seem an unholy location for a distinguished religious building it is one of the most interesting churches in the city. Concealed inside a 17th-century canal house, the clandestine Catholic church is a beautiful and fascinating place.

Interesting places to visit is the maritime museum “het scheepvaerthuis” at the “Prins Hendrikkade” very center of Amsterdam close to the “wallen Red light District and chinese quarter”

It is highly recommended to make an excursion to nearby “De Zaanse Schans” in Zaandam to get a better idea of the colourful past of Amsterdam. Images like windmills – wooden shoes - tulips - and cheese spring to your mind. There is a wooden shoes museum “Klompenmakerij” also the first “Albert Heijn” shop founded in the middle of the 19th century which has developed over the years into the major super food market chain of the Netherlands.

The most famous place to buy tulips from Amstedam is at the “Singel Bloemenmarkt” near the “Munt” the mint-tower where they used to print money.

Keep track of live performance shows in the city. A great number of live performances varying from classical music-jazz-blues-rock pop concerts-entertainment-puppet and erotic shows are on in Amsterdam. Up-to-date list of music dancing halls cafes and places here

It is also recommended to have a pick- nick in the Vondel Park” nearby “het Leidsenplein” where on Sunday all kind of life performances take place. It is a hip enjoyable place a mix of young people lot of them very trendy. Another thing to do is to take a cycling trip on cycle lanes and through the parks and to rent a bike Mac Bike or at and cycle all the way to North of Amsterdam where you can visit the cheese market of “Edam” or further to “Voldendam’ a picturesque fisherman village where you can indulge in fresh fish and chips at one of the harbour restaurants of “Volendam” .

You also might fancy a walk in the Red Light District situated at "Oudekerksplein"

Bordering the Amsterdam Historisch Museum you’ll find the Begeijnhof being the only inner court in Amsterdam which originated in the Middle Ages, and therefore is situated within the Singel - the innermost canal of Amsterdam's circular canal system. The Begijnhof is at medieval street level, which means ONE meter below the rest of the old city center.

More intersting places to visit are "het Joods Historisch Museum" in the former Jewish quarter is actually situated in four former synagogues it has a vast collection of photographs – paintings - artefacts exploring the history of Amsterdam Judaism and abroad. There is a fantastic children's wing -full of interactive exhibits.

There are still today eight windmills in Amsterdam to be seen, the most famous of which is “De Gooyer” in Amsterdam Oost. This windmill is in great shape and dates back from 1725 it once served as a flour mill.

Other places to visit are a small local brewery Brouwerij 't IJ to sip a beer. This small craft brewery has great beers and is only for the local ambiance a must see place in Amsterdam to relax and enjoy however the Heineken experience is a far more interesting excursion located at the “Stadhouderskade – de Pijp”

Amsterdam the Venice of the North consisting of 165 canals encircle the city you can easily get lost in a maze of canals and bridges and it is advised to take a boat tour with one of the many operators.

You might get curious and have a taste of a real specialty raw herring which is quite pleasant to try at one of the local farmers markets places of Amsterdam.
